What Sets ABUAD Apart

ABUAD Academic DNA

Four commitments that most Nigerian universities talk about but ABUAD actually delivers on.

A Calendar You Can Plan Around

ABUAD has maintained its published academic calendar consistently since inception. No indefinite closures, no surprise delays. You can calculate your graduation date before you even matriculate.

Guaranteed Graduation Date

Fully Residential, Fully Equipped

Every student lives on campus. The university runs its own power plant and delivers 24-hour electricity and internet. Your study environment is completely self-contained.

24/7 Power & Internet

Foreign Language as a Requirement

ABUAD is one of the only Nigerian universities that makes foreign language proficiency — French or Mandarin — a condition for graduation. It is embedded in the curriculum, not optional.

French or Mandarin

Professional Certs Inside Your Degree

Relevant professional certifications are built into degree programmes where applicable. Graduates leave with both a degree and documented professional credentials — not just a scroll.

Academic Standards

ABUAD Grading System

ABUAD uses the NUC 5-point CGPA scale. Assessment combines Continuous Assessment (CA) with formal semester examinations. Results are published on the university portal within 24 hours of Senate approval. See our ABUAD grading system & CGPA calculator guide for worked examples and scholarship bands.

Grade Score Range Grade Point Class of Degree
A 70 – 100% 5.0 First Class
B 60 – 69% 4.0 Second Class Upper (2.1)
C 50 – 59% 3.0 Second Class Lower (2.2)
D 45 – 49% 2.0 Third Class
E 40 – 44% 1.0
F 0 – 39% 0.0 Fail

CGPA and Class of Degree

4.50 – 5.00
First Class Honours
3.50 – 4.49
Second Class Upper
2.40 – 3.49
Second Class Lower
1.50 – 2.39

Academic Probation

Note: ABUAD does not award a Pass degree. The minimum graduation standard is Third Class. If a student's CGPA falls below 1.50 at the end of the first year, they are placed on academic probation. A second consecutive year below 1.50 may result in a programme transfer or withdrawal.

Semester Structure

ABUAD Academic Calendar

Two semesters per year, each with clear milestones. ABUAD's calendar compliance is one of the most consistent of any Nigerian university — public or private. See the full ABUAD 2026/2027 academic calendar for exact resumption dates by college and the exam timetable.

Inter-semester breaks at ABUAD are intentionally compressed compared to federal universities, which is how programmes finish within standard NUC-approved durations. The consistent adherence to this calendar is what makes it possible for a student to calculate their graduation date before they even enrol.
Campus Infrastructure

ABUAD Academic Facilities

The campus is self-sufficient in power, water, and internet. Here is what students actually use day-to-day.

Multi-System Teaching Hospital
400-bed facility on campus. Used for clinical training in Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, MLS, Optometry, and Pharmacy.
ICT Building
Over 1,000 networked computers. Hosts e-learning, digital library access, and online examinations. Campus-wide WiFi.
Libraries
Each college has its own specialised library. The law library holds current law reports and a legal research database.
Engineering Complex
3.5-acre facility with fully-equipped labs for all 10 engineering disciplines. Includes a certified Festo mechatronics training centre.
Pharmacy Labs
Dedicated pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacognosy, microbiology, and formulation laboratories.
Talent Discovery Complex
26 sporting facilities and 15 skills studios. Swimming, football, basketball, tennis, and athletics. ABUAD placed 1st in NPUGA 2025 & 2026.
Moot Court
Purpose-built courtroom for Law students to practise trial advocacy and appellate arguments in a realistic setting.
Power Independence
The campus generates and manages its own electricity supply. Zero reliance on the national grid. Power outages do not affect study schedules.
Industrial Training

SIWES — Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme

Industrial training is compulsory for students in applicable programmes at ABUAD. It takes place during the long vacation period and places students in real organisations matched to their discipline.

Engineering, Sciences, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Science, Nursing, and Agriculture are among the programmes that include SIWES as a graduation requirement.

This is not a box-ticking exercise. The field report is formally defended before a panel, and the resulting grade counts toward the student's academic record.

1
Dual Supervision Every student has both an external industry supervisor and an internal academic supervisor throughout the placement.
2
Graded Field Report On completion, a detailed Field Report is written, formally defended before a panel, and graded. The grade feeds into the student's academic record.
3
NUC & ITSF Aligned Duration and timing follow NUC and the Industrial Training Fund (ITF)/SIWES guidelines for each programme.
4
Real Organisations Placements span hospitals, law firms, engineering companies, government agencies, banks, and research institutions.
Innovation & Scholarship

Research Areas

Research at ABUAD is framed around Nigeria and Africa's most pressing problems — not abstract academic exercises. The Office of Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships coordinates this across colleges.

Biomedical Research

Clinical and translational research conducted using the Multi-System Teaching Hospital as a primary research environment alongside the College of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Engineering & Technology

Applied research in petroleum, mechatronics, and renewable energy using the College of Engineering's laboratories and the Festo Training Centre.

Pharmaceutical Research

Drug development, pharmacognosy, and clinical pharmacy research conducted within the College of Pharmacy's dedicated laboratory facilities.

Legal & Policy Research

Research on Nigerian constitutional law, human rights, and international trade. The College of Law engages with both domestic and cross-border legal questions.

Social Sciences & Development

Governance, economic development, conflict resolution, and communication research relevant to the Nigerian and African context.

Common Questions

ABUAD Academics & Courses FAQ

Yes. ABUAD is fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and all relevant professional regulatory bodies across all 41 approved programmes. These include COREN for Engineering, MDCN for Medicine and Dentistry, PCN for Pharmacy, and the Council of Legal Education for Law.
ABUAD uses the NUC 5-point CGPA scale (A = 5.0, F = 0.0). The final Class of Degree is determined by the Cumulative Grade Point Average at graduation. Importantly, ABUAD does not award a Pass degree — the minimum graduation threshold is Third Class Honours (CGPA 1.50–2.39). Students below 1.50 at year-end are placed on academic probation.
Yes. ABUAD operates a 400-bed Multi-System Teaching Hospital directly on its campus. It also holds a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ido-Ekiti, for expanded clinical placement capacity for health science students.
Yes. ABUAD runs Ph.D, M.Sc, LL.M, MBA, and Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) programmes through its School of Postgraduate Studies. These span Engineering, Law, Medicine and Health Sciences, Sciences, and Social and Management Sciences. Part-time and ODL options are available for select programmes.
It depends on the programme. Law (LL.B) is 5 years. Medicine and Surgery (M.B.B.S) and Pharmacy (Pharm.D) are both 6 years. Engineering programmes are 5 years. Architecture is 5 years. Most Science and Social Science B.Sc programmes are 4 years. ABUAD's consistent academic calendar means students graduate within standard duration — there are no session rollovers from strikes or prolonged closures.
Yes. All ABUAD students are required to complete compulsory General Studies (GST) courses accounting for at least 10% of total credit units. GST covers Communication Skills, Nigerian History, Peace and Conflict Studies, and Entrepreneurship. These run alongside professional courses and are designed to broaden graduates beyond their specific disciplines.
