Packing for university is stressful enough. Packing for ABUAD is a completely different challenge because of the university's strict, structured environment.

Every year, freshers arrive at the ABUAD gate with heavily packed boxes, only to spend hours watching security personnel pull out expensive items, throw them in a confiscation bin, and tell them they cannot bring them into the hostel. Worse, they realize they packed heavy clothes they will never wear, while forgetting the important clearance documents and organizational items that actually make a 4-man room livable.

To save you the stress, the tears, and the wasted money, we compiled this packing list using direct feedback from current ABUAD seniors. This guide covers the contraband items you must leave behind, the exact documents you need for clearance, and the insider secrets to surviving the hostel.

1. The "Must-Haves" (The Essentials You Will Regret Forgetting)

The school provides a bed frame, a mattress, a wardrobe, and a reading table. You are responsible for everything else. Here is what you absolutely must bring from home:

Bedding & Sleep

  • Bedsheets and Pillowcases: Bring at least three pairs. Do not assume the school provides them.
  • A Good Pillow: The school mattress is standard, but a quality pillow from home makes a big difference.
  • Duvet or Thick Blanket: It gets cold, especially during the rainy season.
  • Mosquito Net: Essential for protecting yourself at night.

Hostel Survival & Tech Gear

  • High-Quality Extension Wire & Power Bank: Power fluctuations are a reality. Direct charging has ruined many chargers and laptop ports. Current students highly recommend bringing a good surge-protecting extension box and a strong power bank.
  • Rechargeable Fan & Lamp: For nights when the power is out and you need to study or sleep comfortably.
  • Water Drum & Buckets: Water runs on a schedule. If you do not have a large container or drum to store water, you will suffer during the day.
  • Cutlery & Plastic Plates: Spoons and plastic/ceramic plates are allowed. Do not bring breakable glass plates or metal forks/knives (they may be seized as sharp objects).
  • International Adapters (Diaspora Students): If you are flying in from the UK or US, ensure you pack universal power adapters for the standard UK 3-pin sockets used in Nigeria.

2. The Clearance File (Do Not Get Stranded at the Gate)

Before you even think about clothes, you need your official documents. The physical clearance process is strict. Pack a dedicated file with the following originals and multiple photocopies:

  • JAMB Admission Letter and ABUAD Admission Letter
  • JAMB Original Result Slip
  • Original O’Level Certificate(s) (WAEC, NECO)
  • Birth Certificate or Sworn Affidavit of Age
  • Letter of Undertaking/Guarantee from a parent/sponsor
  • Passport Photographs: Print A LOT of passport photographs (at least 20 copies) with varying backgrounds (red and white). You will need them constantly throughout your first year for different departmental registrations.

3. Clothing: Don't Over-Pack Your Casuals

The biggest mistake freshers make is packing massive boxes of casual clothes. ABUAD operates a strict corporate dress code from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You will wear a uniform all day.

For College Hours (The Strict Uniform)

  • College Colors: Buy shirts/blouses in your exact college color (e.g., Red for Medicine, White for Law). Security and higher-level students strictly enforce the exact shade.
  • Black Trousers and Skirts: Skirts must be well below the knee.
  • Corporate Shoes (The "Trek" Shoes): For guys, black flat shoes or loafers. For girls, black flat shoes that cover the toes. No heels, no colored flats, no sandals for classes. You will be trekking a lot, so prioritize comfort.

For Weekends and Evenings

  • Casual Wear: Jeans and t-shirts are allowed after 5:00 p.m. and on weekends.
  • Sneakers and Sandals: For moving around the hostel or going to the cafeteria.
  • A Sturdy Umbrella: The sun in Ado-Ekiti is harsh, and the rain comes without warning. Do not forget this.

4. The Hygiene & Bathroom Reality

This is a major concern for freshers. Here is the exact bathroom situation: for each floor in the hostel, there are 2 to 4 communal bathrooms that students share.

The Insider Secret: Your specific 4-man room is assigned its OWN toilet inside that communal bathroom. You can literally padlock it so that no one else on the floor can use it. Because of this, you must bring your own air fresheners and disinfectants from home to maintain your private toilet. {alertSuccess}

5. Hair & Grooming Strictness

The dress code extends heavily to your hair. Do not spend thousands making your hair before resumption without knowing these rules:

  • For Girls: If you are in Medicine, Pharmacy, or Law, your hair MUST be black and strictly shoulder-length. No crazy colors or massive lengths. Tip: Pack all your hair products and attachments from home, because finding your specific brands on campus can be difficult and highly overpriced.
  • For Guys: Your hair can be grown out, but it must be extremely neat, well-groomed, and not too bushy.
Warning for Guys: If you resume and your hair is deemed too long or rough by security, it will literally be cut to a low-cut right there at the gate before you are allowed in. {alertError}

6. The "Contraband" List (What Will Be Seized at the Gate)

What is banned in ABUAD? Any cooking appliance, raw food item, dangerous weapon, or non-compliant clothing will be immediately confiscated by security personnel at the main gate. Non-perishable items are usually held in a security store until you travel back home, while perishable items are thrown away.

Strictly Banned Electrical Appliances

  • Electric boiling rings (these are the most commonly seized items)
  • Hot plates and gas cookers
  • Microwaves, toasters, and rice cookers
  • Blenders
What IS allowed? You can bring smartphones, laptops, electric fans, flat hair straighteners (not hot combs), and standard electric irons. Kettles are allowed but must be used in the designated porter lounge, NOT in your room. {alertInfo}

Banned Clothing & Personal Items

  • Ripped jeans, crop tops, bum shorts, and revealing necklines.
  • Any form of military camouflage (a very serious offense).
  • Multiple piercings, belly piercings, or colored hair.
  • Sharp Objects: Scissors and metal forks are often seized. If you need scissors for hair braiding, buy a small one on campus later.

Prohibited Food

  • Raw Food & Cooking Items: Noodles, rice, yams, pots, and pans. Since you cannot cook, security will confiscate raw food.

7. ABUAD Provisions & Money Management

Academic Supplies

Laptops are not mandatory, but they are highly essential for assignments and research. When it comes to notes, you don't need to pack heavy individual notebooks. Buying the popular "10-in-1" notebooks is perfectly fine.

Medical Supplies & First Aid

Bring basic OTC drugs like painkillers. However, self-medication is strongly discouraged. Consultation and most prescribed drugs at the ABUAD clinic are completely FREE for students! If a student feels terribly sick at 2:00 AM, they simply tell the porters, who will call an emergency shuttle to take them to the ABUAD Multi-System Hospital.

Prescription Warning: If you have personal prescription drugs, vitamins, or supplements, you MUST declare them on your medical slip at the entrance. If you try to hide them, they will be seized as contraband. {alertWarning}

Smart Financial Management: Provisions

Every current student agrees: campus prices for items like Milo, milk, and toiletries are highly inflated. See the cost analysis below to understand why you must manage your educational budget by buying in bulk before you travel.

Item Type Buying Outside (Home) Buying on ABUAD Campus
Cereals / ProvisionsNormal Market PriceHighly Inflated (Overpriced)
Toiletries / DisinfectantsNormal Market PriceExpensive / Limited Brands
Hair Products / AttachmentsNormal Market PriceVery Expensive / Hard to Find
  • Money: ATMs on campus occasionally have network issues. POS machines and transfers are the most reliable. It is highly recommended to bring two different bank cards to avoid being stranded.
