Here's something nobody tells you on admission day: your degree alone is not enough. Not at ABUAD, not anywhere. The Nigerian job market in 2026 is competitive, digital-first, and increasingly skills-driven — and the students who land the best opportunities are the ones who start preparing early, not the ones who wait until final year.

Certifications Worth Pursuing
A certification does something your transcript can't: it tells an employer exactly what you can do, verified by the issuing body. Aim for at least 2–3 before graduation.
- Google Data Analytics (Coursera): Best all-rounder for any college. Teaches spreadsheets, SQL, and Tableau.
- Google Cybersecurity (Coursera): High demand field, perfect for Sciences/Engineering.
- Azure Fundamentals AZ-900 (Microsoft): Cloud entry point. Take it for free via MS Learn.
- HubSpot Digital Marketing: Very quick (under 5 hours) and excellent for Management Sciences.
Strategy: Pick one certification directly related to your discipline and one that demonstrates digital literacy (like Data Analytics). Add every certification to your LinkedIn profile immediately after completing it.
Soft Skills That Actually Matter
Technical skills get you through the door. Soft skills determine how far you go once you're inside. Every hiring manager in Nigeria will tell you this, and most students ignore it until it's too late.
Communication is the biggest differentiator. Join your college's debating society, volunteer to present in class, write for campus publications. The ability to articulate your ideas clearly — whether in an interview, a meeting, or an email — separates you from equally qualified candidates who can't.
Teamwork and adaptability are non-negotiable. Participate in student organisations, take on cross-functional projects, and learn to accept feedback without taking it personally. Employers aren't looking for lone geniuses — they're looking for people who can collaborate.
Time management is the skill that makes everything else possible. If you can balance academics, skill development, and personal life using tools like Google Calendar or Notion, you're already better prepared than most graduates entering the workforce.
Internships & SIWES
Bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world experience. The Students' Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a mandatory programme coordinated by the ITF for most Science and Engineering degrees, but internships are crucial for everyone.
Start looking 3–6 months early. The biggest mistake students make with internships is starting too late. The best placements at banks, consulting firms, and oil companies have competitive deadlines well in advance.
Register with Your Department
Visit your departmental SIWES coordinator. Provide your matric number, phone, and bank details for ITF stipend processing.
Attend the Orientation
The university runs a mandatory SIWES orientation before your placement starts. It covers rules, expectations, and reporting procedures. Don't skip it.
Secure Your Placement
Apply on platforms like Prosple Nigeria, InternNigeria (interns.ng), MyJobMag, and LinkedIn. Use your college network and ask alumni for referrals.
Maintain Your Logbook
Update it daily. Get it signed weekly by your industry supervisor. This is not a formality — it's graded.
Submit Your Technical Report
Follow your college's prescribed format. Include specific technical details about what you learned and contributed. This is your final assessment.
How to Stand Out During Your Placement
Your internship is your audition for a full-time role. Many Nigerian companies extend offers to their best-performing interns.
- Show up early and stay engaged. Dedication makes an immediate positive impression that no amount of talent can replace.
- Ask smart questions. Not "what should I do?" but "I noticed X — would it make sense to try Y?" This shows initiative.
- Document everything. Beyond your logbook, keep a personal journal of projects, skills learned, and people you worked with. This becomes interview gold later.
- Build relationships. Exchange LinkedIn connections with your supervisors and colleagues. These lead to references, recommendations, and job offers.
Graduate Jobs & Employers
If you're graduating from ABUAD in the coming year, navigate the graduate job market with confidence by preparing for the digital-first hiring norm.
- Digital-first hiring is the norm. Most large employers use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter CVs. If your CV isn't keyword-optimised in PDF format, you're invisible.
- Skills outweigh classification. A 2:2 with a strong portfolio, relevant certifications, and real-world experience will outperform a First Class with nothing but transcripts.
- Structured graduate programmes are the primary entry point. Banks, consulting firms, FMCGs, and oil companies recruit through formal trainee programmes with specific application windows.
- Remote and hybrid roles are expanding. You're no longer limited to Lagos and Abuja. Tech companies and startups offer roles you can do from anywhere.

Freelancing is a legitimate way to earn while studying and build a portfolio:
